Our latest stop was Quartiere Africano, a peaceful residential neighborhood just a short ride from central Rome on Metro Line B.

Despite its name, Quartiere Africano is not an area predominantly inhabited by African communities. The neighborhood takes its name from streets such as Viale Libia and Viale Eritrea, which were named during the district’s development in the 1930s after Italy’s former African colonies.

Today, Quartiere Africano is one of Rome’s most desirable residential districts. Tree-lined streets, neighborhood cafés, and independent restaurants create a relaxed atmosphere where families, students, young professionals, and residents from many different backgrounds live side by side. During the day you’ll find locals walking their dogs or enjoying the nearby parks, while evenings are filled with people gathering for aperitivo after work. It’s a side of Rome that feels authentic, far removed from the city’s busy tourist routes.

Hidden among these quiet streets is Misto, a cocktail bar housed in a beautifully restored loft with an industrial-vintage aesthetic. Inside, soft music, relaxed conversations, and an inviting bar create an atmosphere that feels effortlessly sophisticated without ever being pretentious.

Cocktails Designed to Be Experienced

This summer, Misto introduced a new cocktail collection titled Liquid Rituals.

The menu opens with a simple philosophy,

“We want to rediscover the gestures, rhythms, and awareness that have gradually disappeared from the simple act of drinking. Every cocktail is designed not simply to be consumed, but to be experienced.”

Around the world, an increasing number of bars are creating immersive drinking experiences rather than simply serving great cocktails. At Misto, that philosophy takes the form of Rituali, small rituals that transform each drink into an interactive experience.

Each of the eight signature cocktails comes with its own ritual. Changing the aroma, writing down a wish, choosing the order in which to drink, or simply waiting for time to change the flavor, these small actions invite guests to become part of the experience. The bartender starts the story, but the guest completes it.

J’Adore

A cocktail built around the power of aroma.

First, enjoy the cocktail exactly as it is. Then spray the accompanying essence over the glass and taste it again. Although the liquid itself remains unchanged, the altered aroma completely transforms your perception, making it feel like an entirely different drink.

Ingredients

Beefeater Gin, licorice, coconut water, vanilla, lemon, fig leaf soda, Three Cents

Rituale

Smell, sip, pause, spray the essence, and taste again.

Borealis

Inspired by the Northern Lights, Borealis combines visual presentation with delicate flavors.

Guests are invited to enjoy the cocktail while watching a specially prepared visual display, allowing sight and taste to blend into a quiet, dreamlike experience that evokes the beauty of the aurora.

Ingredients

Wyborowa Vodka, Sabatini 0.0, mountain pine, sage & lemon, fake lime, sugar, Three Cents Aegean Tonic

Rituale

Take your time and enjoy the cocktail while watching the accompanying visual presentation.

Make a Wish

Inspired by the Japanese tradition of Daruma dolls, this cocktail extends the experience long after the last sip.

Guests draw one eye on a miniature Daruma, write a wish on the back, and take it home. Once the wish comes true, they are invited to return to Misto and complete the second eye, finishing both the ritual and the story.

Ingredients

ROKU Gin, yuzu, cherry blossom, blackberry

Rituale

Write your wish, take the Daruma home, and return to complete it when your wish comes true.

Spark

A bold mezcal cocktail inspired by Mexican flavors.

The experience begins by tasting the rim of the glass coated with Tajín, the iconic Mexican seasoning made from chili peppers, lime, and salt. After enjoying the cocktail, guests wait a moment before tasting it again.

The transformation comes from the Electric Flower, an edible flower that creates a gentle tingling sensation and temporarily alters the perception of taste. The same cocktail suddenly reveals completely different flavors.

Ingredients

Mezcal, Santoni Amaro, Strega, orange, agave, Tajín, Electric Flower

Rituale

Wait a moment, then taste the cocktail again.

Spark

Dark / Light

A pair of cocktails inspired by the Nordic idea of balancing light and darkness.

Dark offers deep, rich, velvety flavors, while Light is floral, bright, and delicate. Guests are free to choose which to drink first, alternate between them, or even enjoy both simultaneously. The order changes the experience entirely.

Dark

Four Roses Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Fusetti Cacao Bitter, Maraschino, Cherry, Carpano Classico Vermouth

Light

Sabino Distillati Gin Casa Mia, Violetta, Lillet Blanc, Fino Sherry

Rituale

Enjoy them in whichever order feels right, or together.

A Journey Through Negroni

Misto also reimagines one of Italy’s most iconic cocktails.

Negroni Codex is a guided tasting experience featuring several miniature Negronis, allowing guests to explore the remarkable range of expressions hidden within this timeless classic.

Another standout is R(evolutionary) Negroni. It begins like a crisp Dry Martini, but as ice cubes containing non-alcoholic bitters and vermouth slowly melt, the drink gradually evolves into a classic Negroni.

Other highlights include the Roasted Negroni, enriched with specialty coffee, and the Ronin Negroni, which incorporates Japanese barley shochu to create an elegant East-meets-West interpretation of the classic.

Food That Complements the Cocktails

The food menu is equally thoughtful.

Artisanal charcuterie boards, Mediterranean hummus, Jamón Serrano croquettes, pulled pork and chicken tacos are designed for sharing and pair beautifully with the cocktails. For dessert, the Mojito Baba, infused with rum, mint, and lime, offers a refreshing finish.

In a neighborhood like Quartiere Africano, where people genuinely know how to slow down and enjoy the moment, Misto’s philosophy feels perfectly at home.

Rome is famous for its world-class cocktail bars, but stepping just beyond the historic center reveals a different side of the city’s drinking culture, one shaped by local life rather than tourism.

With Liquid Rituals, Misto transforms cocktails from something simply consumed into experiences that linger long after the glass is empty.

The next time you visit Rome, take a short detour to Quartiere Africano. Beyond the crowds, you’ll discover another side of the Eternal City, one where every cocktail tells a story.
